Moving Overseas With a Domestic Helper From Singapore
Plan a permanent move from Singapore with your domestic helper: compare return, transfer and relocation routes, then sequence visas, consent and Work Permit cancellation.

A permanent move is not an extended family holiday. It ends or changes the Singapore employment arrangement and creates a separate immigration and employment question in the destination country. Start with the helper’s free agreement and compare three routes: accompany the family lawfully, transfer to another Singapore employer, or return home or to another mutually agreed destination.
Choose the route before booking flights
| Route | What must be true | Main risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Helper relocates with family | Mutual agreement plus destination entry, residence and work permission | Assuming the Singapore permit applies abroad |
| Helper transfers in Singapore | Eligible transfer and a new employer completes MOM steps | Cancelling before the transfer is ready |
| Helper returns home | Salary and issues settled, passport valid and employer-paid travel arranged | Buying an impractical or non-compliant itinerary |
| Helper goes elsewhere | Mutual destination agreement and correct entry permission | Sending her to a country that will not admit her |
Discuss salary, duties, accommodation, family separation, medical needs and the expected length of the overseas arrangement privately. Give the helper time to seek advice. A relocation offer should not be tied to threats about salary, documents or repatriation. Record the chosen route and what happens if the destination visa is refused.
Treat destination-country permission as a separate project
A Singapore Work Permit is authorisation for the Singapore job; it is not an international licence. Before the move, use the destination government’s immigration and labour sources or obtain qualified local advice. Verify the correct visa or permit, whether live-in domestic work is allowed, sponsorship rules, minimum terms, medical checks, insurance, tax, accommodation and any direct-hiring restriction.
Singapore MFA’s general travel advice warns that visa and entry rules can change and advises checking with the relevant foreign embassy or official authority. Obtain written confirmation for the helper’s nationality and proposed work—not just the employer’s passport.
| Item | Owner or source | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Helper’s informed agreement | Employer and helper | Signed terms in a language she understands |
| Entry and work authorisation | Destination authority | Approval, conditions and validity dates |
| Overseas employment terms | Employer under destination law | Salary, hours, rest, duties and notice |
| Insurance and healthcare | Destination-compliant insurer or scheme | Territory, limits and effective date |
| Travel and accommodation | Employer | Ticket, luggage, address and transit permissions |
| Plan if permission fails | Employer and helper | Transfer or repatriation timeline and costs |
Sequence the Singapore close-out carefully
MOM’s Work Permit cancellation guide says employers should settle employment issues including salary before cancellation. After cancellation the helper cannot work, and if she remains in Singapore the cancellation process generates a Special Pass for the departure window. Build the final working day around the real travel or transfer plan rather than cancelling early for convenience.
- Six to eight weeks before leaving: compare routes and begin destination permission or Singapore transfer checks.
- Before cancellation: agree the last day, settle salary and contractual issues, confirm passport and approved destination.
- At cancellation: enter accurate departure details and retain the Special Pass or transaction instructions.
- After cancellation: do not assign work; provide food, accommodation and care until departure.
- At departure: keep itinerary and exit evidence and follow MOM’s card and bond instructions.
Meet the employer’s repatriation obligations
MOM’s sending-an-MDW-home guidance says the employer must pay for the air ticket, check-in luggage and connecting transport to the international port nearest the helper’s hometown, unless a lawful alternative destination is mutually agreed. It also says departure should be within two weeks of cancellation and asks parties to agree in writing on transit arrangements and allowance.
MOM says another repatriation destination is possible by mutual agreement and must be declared when cancelling. The helper needs any required visa or entry approval. If there is no agreement, MOM’s destination-dispute guidance says to contact MOM so it can consider the case and decide.
The helper should retain access to her passport, contracts and personal records. Provide copies of final salary payment, travel itinerary, cancellation transaction and overseas terms. Keep communication factual if plans change; a visa refusal or delayed flight may require revised MOM instructions rather than an informal overstay.
If she prefers to remain employed in Singapore, review the direct-transfer guide. For a temporary journey in which the Singapore job continues, use the overseas-trip guide. For transaction details, use the Work Permit cancellation guide.
How this guide avoids overlap
This guide owns the permanent-relocation decision and the bridge between Singapore close-out and destination-country permission. The overseas-trip guide owns temporary travel with the Singapore job continuing; the cancellation guide owns the general MOM transaction; and the non-return guide owns a helper who fails to return from approved leave.
Sources and review note
Reviewed on 8 October 2026 against current MOM cancellation, repatriation, transfer, salary and passport guidance plus MFA travel advice. Destination-country immigration and employment rules change; confirm the helper’s nationality-specific position with official destination sources before travel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take my Singapore domestic helper when I relocate overseas?
Only if the helper agrees and the destination country gives every required entry, residence and work authorisation. A Singapore MDW Work Permit does not authorise employment abroad. Check the destination’s official immigration and labour rules before promising the move or cancelling the Singapore permit.
When should I cancel my helper’s Singapore Work Permit?
Prepare the lawful destination, travel and final-employment plan first. MOM says the helper cannot work after cancellation and generally must depart Singapore within two weeks. Cancel within MOM’s required timing for the actual final day, then follow the Special Pass and departure instructions.
Can my helper choose to return somewhere other than her home country?
MOM allows another destination by mutual agreement, with the destination declared during cancellation. The helper still needs the correct entry permission for that destination. If employer and helper cannot agree, MOM says to contact it for help and a decision.
